Power Steering Adapters
In October of 2010, we worked with 4M Industries to develop a limited production run of short shift levers for the snailshell-equipped 924s. These shift levers are CNC-machined from billet aluminum, and based on the original design of long-time 924board.org member "Lizard"...but we took the design improvement one step further.

We felt that the height of the original design was nice for road use, but perhaps a bit short for track use, where you may wish for less distance and motion between the steering wheel and the shift knob. Consequently, we intentionally had the machinist leave the length of the shift lever a bit longer.

The pivot points determine the shorter throws (approximately 50%). The height of the knob (and therefore distance from steering wheel) may be customized by the individual owner by simply trimming the end of the lever.

This is a direct bolt-in replacement for the factory G31 / 016Y/Z shift lever, and uses all of the factory bushings and mounting arrangement. Note, however, that this lever is designed to accommodate aftermarket shift knobs, not the factory knob. We highly recommend the Momo Super Anatomico.

California MotorsportsCalifornia Motorsports has specialized in transaxle Porsche gearboxes for more than 30 years. As an exclusive importer of Albins Off Road Gear racing gears, CMS was able to commission the development of the infamous 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear dogteeth that notoriously go bad on the so-called "snailshell" gearboxes. These gears are NLA from Porsche and not available anywhere else.

The 1979 924 normally aspirated cars had a version of this gearbox, also known as the G16, and the 1979-1980 931 had a version known as the G31. The G16
and G31 have different 1st gear dogteeth, both of which are available from Ideola's Garage courtesy of CMS. The same dogteeth gear is used for both 2nd and 3rd gear across both gearboxes. Each dogteeth gear is $225, a 10% discount off of the direct pricing available from CMS!

Exclusive! Brass Bushings for G16/G31 Universal Coupler
The OEM plastic bushings for the snailshell shift rod universal coupler have slop "built in". While the slop might make the shifter feel a bit smoother at first, the plastic bushings quickly degrade, increasing in sloppiness, and contributing to the notorious synchro and dog ring wear. These solid brass bushings eliminate ALL slop, and make the shifting action must firmer and more precise, almost like a gated feeling. At $14 a pair, these are cheaper than you can buy the plastic ones from the big catalog resellers!
G31/G16 Shift Linkage Rebuild Kit
Includes replacement OEM bushings for the rear coupler shown below, along with the 4 plastic shift lever bushings, and a new "angle joint", which is the ball socket at the end of the shift lever guide tube.

NOTE: The kits listed on this page are NOT available from Porsche as "kits". This is a service that we provide to make ordering easier. Many of the items in these kits must be sourced individually from multiple locations. Please plan for a minimum of 2-3 weeks before shipment on these kits!!!
Exclusive! Ideola's Rebuild Kits
Another problem plaguing the snailshell owner has been the lack of  rebuilt kits. The seal kits and synchros have been NLA from Porsche for some time. But with the help of other transaxle enthusiasts and some select suppliers, we've been able to identify direct fit replacement parts from other transaxles and can now offer complete rebuild kits, consisting of the following components:
  • first gear synchro ring
  • second gear synchro ring
  • anchor blocks for 1st & 2nd gear synchros
  • input shaft radial seal
  • (2) stub axle radial seals
  • shift selector radial seal
  • differential cover o-ring
  • (2) transaxle fill plugs
  • (2) rear shifter coupling bushes (plastic)
  • ball cup shifter joint

NOTE: the front housing to mid housing paper gasket that was previously included with this kit is now NLA from Porsche.
