Managing Cam Timing
On a head that has been decked, "degreeing" the cam allows you to get the cam dialed in precisely for where you want peak power. Factory settings are for optimal balance of efficiency-power-reliability, so there is opportunity on a performance build to gain additional power and to fine tune where that power comes in.

In general, advancing the cam timing will result in higher low-RPM torque, but will adversely affect high-RPM HP. Retarding the cam does the opposite: lowers low-RPM torque, but increases high-RPM HP.

For street applications, you might wish to advance your cam timing for peppier off-the-line response. For track applications, you might also want to be able to adjust timing (if rules allow) to put the power band where you want it depending on the venue. More advance is better for tighter lower speed tracks where torque is more important than high-end HP; retarding the timing is better for bigger tracks with long straights where top-end HP is paramount.

The 924/931 standard motor responds well to +10 degrees of cam timing. The OEM cam sprocket has 44 teeth, meaning that setting the timing belt "off" by one tooth can offer a way to advance or retard cam timing by 8.2 degrees. With a +/- 3 degree gear, you have the ability to set the cam timing as follows:

  • -11: gear at -3, belt 1 tooth retarded
  • -8: gear at 0, belt 1 tooth retarded
  • -5: gear at -3, belt 1 tooth advanced
  • -3: gear at -3, belt at TDC
  • 0: gear and belt at TDC
  • +3: gear at +3, belt at TDC
  • +5: gear at +3, belt 1 tooth retarded
  • +8: gear at 0, belt 1 tooth advanced
  • +11: gear at +3, belt 1 tooth advanced

For a more economical alternative, you may wish to reuse your stock valve spring set. Suitable only for stock or Stage1 cams. High lift cams require the heavy duty springs included above.

We recommend that the valves be ordered uncut, and a little longer than stock so that your machinist can match them specifically to your cam and lifter setup. If desired, the valves may be ordered in OEM-spec lengths:
  • NA = 137.2mm intake, 136.95mm exhaust
  • 931 = 133.2mm intake, 133.35mm exhaust

Exclusively from Ideola's Garage! We are the sole US distributor of the Sten Parner solid lifters for the 2.0L platform. These lifters are a solid design, eliminating the adjusting grub screw and the hole in the OEM design, which is a leading cause of lifter failure in high-revving situations.

In addition, the Parner lifters weigh only ~65 grams with lash cap. In comparison, each OEM lifter + adjusting screw weighs ~93 grams. By switching to these solid lifters, you can remove ~224 grams of weight from the valve train! This translates to a faster revving motor and ultimately more power. The solid design should also allow highly prepped motors to safely rev past the 6500 RPM limit of the OEM design.

Manley 8mm Lash Caps
Solid lifters require the use of lash caps, which must be precision ground to set the proper valve stem clearance. These 8mm lash caps from Manley are suitable for use with the 8mm stems of the Big Valve Kit. We recommend ordering two sets, one for setting initial lash, and one to use later for fine tuning the lash after engine break-in. If you require lash caps for the OEM 9mm valve stems, please inquire to special order.

Redline Weber CarburetorHowever, we have worked with Redline Weber directly to put together an even better package using dual 45 DCOEs for improved top range performance. Our kit includes the necessarly low speed idle tuning jets and properly sized venturis to properly setup the 45 DCOE configuration for street driving, while still delivering the superior top-end performance of the larger carbs.

Diamond Pistons
Diamond PistonsWe can now source a variety of piston configurations through Diamond Racing, including US-spec and Euro-spec configurations for normally aspirated applications, and US-spec 931 applications. Options include:
  • custom compression ratio
  • custom dish volume
  • OEM spec bores of 86.5mm, 86.75mm, 87mm, or custom bores up to the block's maximum (approx. 88mm)
  • valve reliefs
  • offset pin height for strokers
  • custom coatings (ceramic tops, teflon skirts)
Diamond pistons are forged from 2618 or 4032 aluminum and CNC machined. All piston sets include wrist pins, retainers and rings. The inclusion of rings in the price makes these an attractive option, as oversize ring sets for OEM pistons are nearly half the cost of a completely new set of Diamond pistons!

Special Coatings

Ceramic coatings on the crown improve the piston's resistance to detonation and heat damage. Teflon coatings on the skirt decrease friction and wear. These coatings are particularly beneficial for forced induction  and high compression normally aspirated applications.
